Hull funeral director Robert Bush sentenced for massive fraud and unlawful burials
Robert Bush, 48, the former owner of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, has been convicted of 67 offences committed over a twelve‑year period. The offences include 30 counts of preventing lawful burials, numerous fraud charges tied to selling funeral plans that were never carried out, theft from twelve charities and fraudulent trading.
During a five‑day sentencing hearing at Hull Crown Court, more than 200 victim impact statements were heard. Police raids uncovered roughly 35 bodies and over 100 sets of ashes stored in deplorable conditions, including the remains of a stillborn baby found in a paper bag. Victims reported receiving the wrong ashes, often belonging to other families or even animals. The scheme defrauded over two hundred customers, extracting more than £562,000 in payments, and an estimated £1.49 million was transferred from the business accounts to Bush’s personal bank account.
Prosecutors have urged a custodial term of 20 to 25 years, describing the case as “unprecedented”. Bush has expressed remorse in court, acknowledging his actions and accepting that he is despised by the families affected.
