UK garage industry calls for MOT fee increase to £95

UK automotive industry bodies are calling for a significant increase in the maximum fee for Class 4 MOT tests, which has remained capped at £54.85 since 2010. The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is campaigning to raise the cap to £95, arguing that the current rate is unsustainable due to rising costs in labor, rent, energy, and equipment.

Simultaneously, the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) is proposing that the existing £54.85 cap be converted into a statutory minimum. This move aims to prevent garages from offering heavily discounted tests, which the IAAF claims undervalues the regulated safety inspection and hinders investment in necessary equipment.

Industry representatives have secured a meeting with the Department for Transport on 21 October to discuss the matter. The IGA has warned that if fees are not adjusted, motorists may face reduced testing capacity, longer wait times, and less consumer choice as garages scale back their MOT offerings.
