UK gardeners urged to reseed, treat moss and feed lawns for a healthy summer

Homeowners are advised to repair bare lawn patches by preparing the soil, applying quality grass seed and protecting it until germination. Recommendations include adding topsoil, using seed mixes matched to existing grass types, choosing coated seeds that deter birds, and keeping the seedbed moist. Over‑seeding can also be done with ready‑made repair kits that combine seed, fertilizer and moisture‑retaining agents.

In May, UK gardeners should focus on three tasks: remove moss with a lawn tonic or iron sulphate and then scarify and aerate the soil; reseed any bare areas, especially in shaded spots, with appropriate seed and a phosphorus‑rich feed; and balance soil pH by applying lime to improve nutrient uptake. Regular watering and feeding every two months will help the lawn withstand dry spells and foot traffic throughout the summer.
