UK gilt yields hit multi-decade highs amid Budget pressure
United Kingdom government borrowing costs have surged as gilt yields reached their highest levels in decades. Ten-year gilt yields reached 5.29 per cent, while 30-year bonds climbed toward 6 per cent, a level not seen since 1998. This market volatility has increased pressure on Chancellor John Healey ahead of the scheduled October 28 Budget.
During Prime Minister’s Questions, Prime Minister Andy Burnham declined to rule out further tax increases, stating he would not commit to specific fiscal measures before the Budget is presented. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticized the administration, citing warnings from economist Lord Jim O’Neill that rising borrowing costs are a direct consequence of recent government statements.
Analysts have warned that if energy prices continue to rise, the upcoming fiscal event could transform into an emergency Budget. Such a scenario might necessitate significant tax hikes or welfare spending cuts to manage the debt interest bill and address fiscal gaps caused by rising oil prices and inflation.
