England high streets to receive £210m boost for regeneration
The UK government has announced a £210 million investment package to revitalise high streets and town centres across England. The initiative aims to combat the decline of local shopping districts by repurposing derelict and vacant buildings into community-focused spaces such as cafes, shared workspaces, health centres, and civic hubs.
The funding is divided into several key components. A £125 million Derelict Buildings Fund will assist local authorities in renovating unused commercial properties, including shopping centres and cinemas. An additional £65 million is earmarked to help communities rescue local assets at risk of closure, such as pubs and sports clubs.
Furthermore, £20 million will support two specific programs: £10 million for High Street Rental Auctions, which allows councils to auction off commercial properties that have been vacant for over 12 months, and £10 million for a Co-operative Development Programme to encourage worker- or community-owned businesses.
In Mansfield, the local council has already launched a consultation regarding the High Street Rental Auction scheme to address long-term vacancies in its town centre. The government intends to publish a comprehensive high streets strategy later this year.
