UK government announces £48m partnership to accelerate dementia research
Andy Burnham has announced a £48 million industry partnership aimed at accelerating dementia research and the search for a cure. The initiative includes a £33 million government investment combined with funding from Bristol Myers Squibb, GSK, and Gates Ventures.
The capital will support The Barbara Alliance, established in memory of Dame Barbara Windsor, to speed up the development of dementia treatments. A key component of the plan is the creation of a platform to connect health data, research, and clinical trial infrastructure, making it easier to recruit participants for studies.
Dementia will also be a primary focus for the new Health Data Research Service, which is supported by up to £600 million from the government and the Wellcome Trust. This service aims to integrate NHS and research data into a single system to drive scientific breakthroughs.
