UK government announces brain cancer treatment reforms

The UK government has announced a series of reforms aimed at accelerating the development and delivery of brain cancer treatments. The initiative follows a high-profile campaign by Archie Goodburn, a 25-year-old swimmer diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer, who appealed for faster progress during a BBC Breakfast appearance.

Key components of the plan include an immediate expert review led by Professor Anthony Chalmers, which is expected to report within three months. This review will assess progress since 2018 and inform a subsequent national action plan. To support these efforts, the Department of Health and Social Care will appoint a new national brain cancer clinical lead.

Additionally, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has been directed to complete its review of regulations regarding orphan drugs—medicines for rare conditions—in two years instead of three. The government also intends to host a roundtable with researchers, clinicians, and charities to develop strategies for increasing patient participation in clinical trials.
