UK Government announces crackdown on high-risk cosmetic procedures

The UK government is introducing new regulations to target ‘cosmetic cowboys’—unqualified individuals performing dangerous aesthetic treatments. Under the proposed rules, any procedure involving dermal filler injections outside of the face, such as liquid Brazilian butt lifts (BBLs), will be legally classified as cosmetic surgical procedures and may only be performed by qualified doctors.

Other high-risk non-surgical treatments, including deep chemical peels, vampire facials, dermal micro-coring, and certain laser procedures, will be restricted to specific trained professionals, including doctors, dentists, midwives, pharmacists, and certain nurses. The government also plans to implement a licensing system for practitioners performing botox and lip fillers to ensure strict safety standards.

The crackdown follows several high-profile incidents involving severe complications and deaths resulting from treatments performed in unregulated settings like private homes or temporary accommodations. Additionally, the new measures aim to protect minors by banning high-risk aesthetic and wellbeing treatments for individuals under the age of 18.
