UK Government announces funding to tackle homelessness and care leaver isolation

The UK government has announced a £442 million funding package aimed at reducing rough sleeping and providing emergency accommodation this winter. Announced by Housing Secretary Angela Rayner, the initiative seeks to provide a route off the streets by Christmas through a combination of housing, health, and practical support. The program also aims to deliver over 1,000 settled homes over the next three years, with specific guidance issued to support women who may face increased risks of violence or exploitation while sleeping rough.

In a separate initiative addressing social isolation, the government is rolling out a strengthened housing program for young people leaving the care system, backed by £25 million this year. This follows an independent review led by Ashley John-Baptiste and Clare Chamberlain, which highlighted the profound isolation and high mortality rates among care-experienced young adults aged 18 to 24. The new funding focuses on expanding connected housing models to ensure young people have community support as they transition to adulthood.
