UK government announces military and AI support for wildfire response

The UK government has unveiled a national strategy to combat rising wildfire risks, including the establishment of a permanent military aerial firefighting capability. Royal Air Force Chinook helicopters and A400M aircraft will be equipped to assist fire crews in reaching remote moorlands, steep hillsides, and other difficult terrain.

The initiative includes a £45 million investment to provide frontline firefighters with specialist, lightweight, and breathable personal protective equipment designed specifically for long-duration wildfire combat. To improve prevention, the government will allocate £25 million to restore dried-out peatlands in England to serve as natural firebreaks and provide financial support to farmers for land fireproofing.

The plan follows a period of intense wildfire activity, including a blaze in Stourbridge that destroyed 19 homes. The strategy also involves exploring tougher local restrictions or product bans to prevent accidental fires during high-risk periods and utilizing artificial intelligence for wildfire detection.
