UK government announces new registration rules for short-term holiday lets

The UK government has announced new regulations for short-term holiday lets, set to be introduced next March. Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Lisa Nandy confirmed the department is accelerating the creation of a register for short-term lets following requests from local authorities.

Under the proposed scheme, owners will be required to register their accommodation, provide key property information, pay a registration fee, and display a registration number in all advertisements. The move aims to address housing shortages in areas where local residents face acute lack of availability, while still allowing for tourism support in specific regions.

Brighton and Hove City Council, which lobbied for these changes, welcomed the announcement. Local councillors noted that while the rules are not exhaustive, they represent a significant step in managing the impact of short-term rentals on local communities.
