UK government announces pension and housing benefit reforms

The UK government has announced significant changes to welfare and pension systems. Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that the current State Pension triple lock will remain in place until April 2030. Following this period, the Labour Party plans to transition to a new system where the pension rises by either inflation or 2.5%, while maintaining its value relative to earnings. This policy change is contingent on the party winning the next general election.

Additionally, new regulations regarding housing benefits are being implemented to assist residents in supported housing and temporary accommodation. The changes aim to eliminate a “cliff edge” where increasing working hours previously led to a disproportionate reduction in Housing Benefit compared to Universal Credit. The new rules align housing benefit calculations with Universal Credit, ensuring that more than 325,000 residents do not face a drop in income when they increase their employment hours. Homelessness minister Florence Eshalomi noted that the government is investing over £4 billion to address homelessness through these reforms.
