UK government asylum housing plans trigger local opposition

North Yorkshire County Council leader Carl Les has written to the Home Office urging ministers to scrap plans to use the former RAF Linton‑on‑Ouse base for up to 1,200 single‑male asylum seekers. He says the proposal conflicts with the Home Secretary’s statement that asylum accommodation should not be near schools, and highlights the village’s limited infrastructure, utilities, healthcare and transport.

A similar scheme proposes placing more than 1,000 adult male asylum seekers on a Ministry of Defence site near Bicester, Oxfordshire. Residents, the local parish council and MP Calum Miller have voiced strong objections, citing inadequate services, property‑value impacts and safety concerns. Over 7,000 people have signed a petition against the plan, and officials face criticism for lacking detailed arrangements for language support and community integration.
