UK government bans disposable barbecue sales to prevent wildfires
The UK government has announced a temporary national ban on the sale of disposable barbecues to mitigate wildfire risks during hot and dry weather. This measure is intended to complement existing local restrictions, such as the Public Spaces Protection Order in the New Forest, which has prohibited fires, barbecues, and outdoor cooking equipment since 2023.
In Hampshire, fire officials reported that the number of wildfires recorded so far this year has already exceeded the total for all of 2025. Emergency services are currently managing a significant heathland fire in the New Forest that has affected over 100 hectares.
While the new government guidance restricts the sale and distribution of disposable barbecues, fire chiefs noted that it does not ban their use. Authorities are urging the public to avoid using any heat sources, including disposable barbecues, campfires, or stoves, in parks and countryside areas to prevent further damage to wildlife and reduce pressure on emergency services.
