UK government considers reducing firework noise limits
The UK government is weighing proposals to reduce the maximum noise limit for fireworks sold to the public. The plan involves lowering the limit from 120 decibels to 110 decibels, a move officials say could reduce perceived loudness by approximately 50 percent.
The proposed reforms would target privately purchased pyrotechnics rather than professional displays. This follows sustained pressure from animal welfare groups and emergency services, who cite the negative impact of loud bangs on pets, wildlife, and individuals with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
While ministers have ruled out an outright ban on public sales, Business Minister Kate Dearden stated the department is considering reforms focused on noise and contributions to antisocial behavior. Industry figures suggest around 20 million people participate in private firework displays annually. The British Fireworks Association has cautioned that a balance must be struck to prevent the emergence of a black market for noisier products.
