UK government considers tax increases in upcoming Autumn Budget

The UK government is preparing a series of tax increases for the upcoming Autumn Budget on October 28, aimed at reducing national debt and managing fiscal headroom. One major proposal under consideration is aligning Capital Gains Tax (CGT) rates with income tax bands, potentially raising the rate to 45 percent. Other potential reforms include a proportional property tax to replace parts of the council tax system and the inclusion of pensions in Inheritance Tax calculations starting in April 2027.

In response to these fiscal plans, leaders from major financial industry bodies, including UK Finance, TheCityUK, and the CBI, have warned Chancellor John Healey that increasing taxes on the banking sector could harm the UK's competitiveness. They cautioned that tax decisions should be evaluated based on their long-term effects on investment rather than just short-term revenue generation. Industry representatives noted that UK banks already face a higher total tax rate on profits compared to counterparts in cities like Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Dublin.
