UK government creates 300,000 temporary jobs for young people

The United Kingdom announced that it will fund 300,000 new temporary jobs and training placements for people aged 16 to 24. The scheme, focused on sectors such as construction, health and social care, and hospitality, follows an earlier £3.36 billion youth‑employment package that was expected to generate about 200,000 positions.

The initiative comes a day after a report warned that the country faces a “lost generation” of youth, noting that “one in eight young people is currently out of education, employment or training” and that the figure could rise to one in six within five years, affecting roughly 1.25 million individuals. At the same time, the overall unemployment rate in the UK slipped to 5% in the most recent quarter.

The government says the temporary roles will provide work experience and short‑term subsidised training for job‑seekers receiving benefits, aiming to reduce youth inactivity and improve long‑term prospects.
