UK government expected to approve Jackdaw gas field

The UK government is expected to approve the Jackdaw gas field off the coast of Aberdeen as soon as September 15, potentially ending years of legal delays. The project is operated by a joint venture between Shell and Equinor. While the previous administration approved the field in 2022, court challenges from environmental campaigners blocked extraction until new government consent was granted.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has signaled a pragmatic approach to energy, stating that while oil and gas will remain part of the energy mix for decades, there is a commitment to transitioning to clean energy. The decision comes amid rising energy prices affecting the British economy. While Jackdaw is nearing approval, government sources suggest an expansion of the Rosebank oil field is unlikely to receive similar consent.

Climate activists, including groups from Fossil Free London and Friends of the Earth, have staged demonstrations to protest the decision. They argue that approving new North Sea developments is a “staggering step backwards” and could cause the UK to exceed its carbon budget required to limit global warming.
