UK government introduces bill to accelerate cladding remediation

The UK government has introduced the Remediation of Unsafe Cladding Bill to Parliament to accelerate the removal of dangerous cladding from residential buildings. The legislation aims to provide certainty regarding which buildings require remediation and establishes stricter enforcement measures for those responsible for building safety.

Key provisions of the bill include a new legal duty for freeholders and other responsible parties to identify and fix safety issues without delay. Failure to comply could result in criminal penalties or financial sanctions from the First-tier Tribunal of up to £500,000. To prevent delays, the bill allows third parties, such as local authorities and Homes England, to step in and perform remediation if responsible entities fail to act.

Building Safety Minister Baroness Blake stated that the bill is a milestone intended to ensure residents have a clear route to remediation and to provide regulators with the necessary powers to take action. The government expects the bill to accelerate work for approximately 12,000 residents.
