UK Government introduces free bus travel for children and VAT cuts in Great British Summer Savings

The UK Government’s Great British Summer Savings scheme provides free bus travel for children aged five to fifteen on most local bus services across England for the entire month of August. Children under five already travel for free.

The programme also reduces VAT on children’s meals in restaurants, theatre and cinema tickets and on family attractions such as theme parks and adventure centres. The Department for Transport listed sites that can be reached with the free‑travel scheme, including York Dungeon, Windsor Castle and the National Space Centre in Leicester.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the measures are intended to ease cost‑of‑living pressures on families. The government also announced that a £2 cap on bus fares for all passengers will be introduced from the start of next year, replacing the current £3 cap.
