United Kingdom launches Be Ready emergency preparedness campaign

The British government has launched the “Be Ready” campaign, a three-year national initiative urging households to stockpile essential supplies for at least 72 hours. The guidance recommends maintaining a three-day supply of bottled water (approximately three liters per person per day), non-perishable food, cash, first-aid kits, torches, batteries, and battery-powered or hand-crank radios.

Defense Secretary Wes Streeting warned that the nation must strengthen its resilience against a range of escalating threats, including state-sponsored terrorism, cyberattacks, and climate-related disasters such as floods and wildfires. Streeting noted that hostile states could expand their military and economic capabilities by 2030, suggesting the UK has roughly 1,000 days to bolster its defenses and readiness.

Beyond physical security, officials highlighted vulnerabilities in digital and food infrastructure. Concerns have been raised regarding cyberattacks on supermarket supply chains and payment systems, which could lead to real-world shortages and the inability to use electronic banking. The campaign aims to empower citizens to manage the initial stages of a crisis independently while emergency services respond.
