UK Government Launches Media Reform Package Addressing Trust and Spectrum Funding

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport released a green paper titled “Watch this Space: A New Strategic Direction for UK Media,” outlining a new approach to information governance. The paper argues that the state should help create a “healthy information environment,” ensuring citizens encounter trustworthy content and proposing a role for government in curating factual media.

In parallel, the BBC Charter Review raised a £3.6 billion question on how to fund the public broadcaster through spectrum allocation. Ofcom is moving ahead with a split of the 6 GHz band for mobile and Wi‑Fi use, and the review suggests that proceeds from spectrum reallocation could support the BBC’s future budget. Together, the initiatives signal a broader UK policy shift that links media content regulation with financing mechanisms based on spectrum resources.
