UK government launches new employment drive for neurodivergent people
The UK Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has launched a new initiative to increase employment rates among neurodivergent individuals. Following recommendations from the Expert Academic Panel on Neurodiversity, the government is shifting toward a needs-led approach rather than one strictly based on medical diagnoses.
The panel's report covers a wide range of conditions, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, developmental language disorder, dyspraxia, tic disorders, and traumatic brain injury. The findings suggest that employers should focus on the specific barriers an individual faces in their role to provide practical support.
Data indicates a significant employment gap, with only 34 per cent of disabled people with autism in work during 2024/25, compared to 55 per cent of disabled people overall. Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden stated that providing tailored support through programs like ‘Connect to Work’ can help neurodivergent people thrive, benefiting both individuals and the economy.
