UK Government Moves to Ban Unlicensed Gambling Sponsorships in Sport
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has launched an eight‑week consultation on prohibiting sponsorship deals with gambling operators that do not hold a UK Gambling Commission licence. The proposal, aimed at implementation in August 2027 (or phased to August 2028), would ban physical sponsorships such as kit logos, stadium billboards and venue naming rights, while leaving online advertising untouched. Entain, the UK‑based gambling group, urged the government to act now, saying “the Government has rightly recognised that these sponsorship arrangements create risks for consumers and for sport.” The company warns that unlicensed operators currently account for nearly half of gambling advertising spend and that their presence on club kits “cannibalises the regulated market.” Roughly 40 % of English Premier League clubs have contracts with unlicensed operators, exemplified by Everton’s recent deal with Stake. Gambling Minister Fiona Twycross framed the measure as a consumer‑protection and anti‑money‑laundering step, noting that most other sports sectors are expected to be unaffected. The consultation closes on 9 September, after which the government plans to decide on the final rules.
