UK Government pauses Companies House filing reforms for small entities

The UK government has announced a pause on the requirement for small companies and micro-entities to file profit and loss accounts with Companies House, originally slated for April 2028. This decision follows recommendations from the Small Business Regulatory Taskforce and aims to allow for further exploration of ways to streamline filing processes between Companies House and HMRC under the ‘tell Government once’ initiative.

Despite this pause, the government maintains its commitment to the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 (ECCTA 2023). Reforms intended to improve data transparency, accuracy, and reliability to combat economic crime remain a priority. Small companies will continue to have the option to file abridged accounts or ‘fillet’ profit and loss information after April 2028.

Additionally, the government is moving toward mandatory software filing for all companies to improve financial data quality. Regarding system access, Companies House has transitioned its login processes to the GOV.UK One Login system. As of October 2025, WebFiling requires a connection to a GOV.UK One Login, and shared team logins are no longer supported as each login is tied to a single individual.
