UK Government pauses Local Government Reorganisation plans

The UK Government has paused the Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) process following new legal advice. Decisions regarding restructuring in Essex, Hampshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk have been withdrawn, while plans for 16 other areas are currently under review. The Government confirmed that local elections scheduled for May 2027 will proceed using existing council boundaries.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has called for a clear timetable, warning that the pause creates significant uncertainty for councils that have already invested public funds and resources into these programmes. The LGA emphasized that local expertise must be integrated into future decision-making to ensure reforms work for residents.

In Nottinghamshire, the council leader noted that the pause may be linked to multiple judicial reviews filed by Reform authorities. Despite the government's decision to halt the process, local leadership intends to continue legal challenges regarding the criteria used in previous decision-making processes.
