UK Government pledges £210m for high street regeneration

The UK government has pledged £210 million to regenerate high streets by repurposing boarded-up shops, pubs, and clubs into community hubs, cafes, and shared workspaces. The funding includes a £125 million derelict buildings fund to assist local councils in transforming vacant shopping centres, cinemas, and abandoned structures into health centres or community halls. An additional £65 million is designated to help communities rescue businesses and buildings at risk of closure.

Andy Burnham stated the initiative aims to “restore pride and bring hope back” by empowering locals to revitalize their areas. The move comes as high streets face significant pressure from the shift toward online shopping, rising business costs for energy and labor, and a cost-of-living crisis that has reduced consumer spending on non-essential services.
