UK Government proposes reforms to protect cohabiting couples

The UK government has opened a consultation on reforming cohabitation law, aiming to give unmarried couples legal and financial protection if they separate or one partner dies without a will. Current law offers no automatic rights to a partner’s property, savings or pension, leaving many couples, especially those with children, vulnerable.

Family‑law firm Jones Myers supports the proposals and advises clients to consider co‑habitation agreements that set out how assets will be divided. The firm stresses the importance of independent legal advice and regular review of such agreements, which can also serve as a framework for future prenuptial arrangements. The consultation closes on 14 August 2026.
