UK government proposes teen nighttime social‑media curfew
The British government has announced a draft rule that would block access to social‑media platforms for 16‑ and 17‑year‑olds between midnight and 6 a.m. The six‑hour curfew is intended to improve sleep, reduce anxiety and curb online bullying among older teenagers.
Platforms and app stores would be required to enforce the block, with age verification built into design and optional parental overrides. Digital‑rights groups warn of privacy and practical challenges, while some critics argue that 16‑ and 17‑year‑olds should retain more online autonomy.
Technology minister Liz Kendall said the measures are “critical to help young people get the sleep they need, focus on school and spend quality time with family.” A government‑backed pilot involving 309 households reported better sleep, mood and concentration when a night‑time restriction was applied, though participants also complained about losing contact with friends on apps like Snapchat.
