UK Government Responds to Petition on Dog Walking in Extreme Heat

A petition launched in April 2026 calling for legislation to make walking or exercising dogs illegal when temperatures reach 25 °C or higher has gathered 10,892 signatures. The petition urges protection against heatstroke and burned paws, citing advice from the RSPCA and the risk of hot pavements.

The UK Government replied that existing animal‑welfare law already covers such situations. Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, it is an offence to cause unnecessary suffering, and the duty to protect animals includes safeguarding them from extreme temperatures. The response also referenced Defra’s Code of Practice for the Welfare of Dogs.

The government’s stance emphasizes that current legislation and guidance are deemed sufficient, while animal‑welfare groups continue to highlight the need for public awareness and responsible pet‑care during heatwaves.
