UK government reviews electric vehicle mandates for automakers

The United Kingdom government has launched a consultation to review its electric vehicle (EV) mandates for automakers. The review seeks to consider alternative pathways for zero-tailpipe-emission vehicle targets following pressure from the automotive industry.

Currently, mandates require that 33% of new car sales be zero-emission by 2026, 80% by 2030, and 100% by 2035. However, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has reported that manufacturers are losing billions of pounds in discounts to meet these targets, and current market share projections suggest the 2026 goal may not be met.

The government is considering four alternative pathways. Three options involve maintaining the 2035 deadline but reducing the 2030 target to between 50% and 70%. A fourth option would maintain the current trajectory but introduce greater flexibility for manufacturers. SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes stated the review is essential for the competitiveness of the sector and the success of the nation's EV transition.
