UK government seeks justice for George Low murder in Cyprus

The British government has committed to maintaining pressure on Turkey regarding the 2016 murder of George Low in Ayia Napa, Cyprus. The case was recently debated in the UK House of Commons following requests from Dartford MP Jim Dickson to leverage British diplomatic relations with both Cyprus and Turkey to seek justice.

George Low, a 22-year-old from Dartford, was stabbed to death during his holidays in Cyprus. Two suspects, Mehmet Akpinar and Sali Ahmet, were believed to have fled to the northern occupied areas of Cyprus following the attack. While Turkish Cypriot authorities previously detained the men, they were eventually deported rather than prosecuted for the murder. A recent attempt to prosecute Akpinar in Turkey’s Hatay province was dropped.

British Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs Uma Kumaran stated that the government remains ‘actively involved’ in the case. The parents of the victim, Helen and Martyn Low, expressed increased hope for justice following the parliamentary discussion, describing the proceedings as ‘very encouraging’.
