UK government targets organized crime gangs behind illegal waste dumping

Andy Burnham has announced a major crackdown on organized crime gangs profiting from large-scale illegal waste dumping, known as fly-tipping. The new strategy shifts focus from merely clearing waste to dismantling the criminal networks responsible.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) will play a central role in the operation, working alongside regional agencies, local councils, and the Environment Agency to share intelligence and target criminal operations. Authorities will have increased powers to seize assets, including cash, cars, and homes, from those involved. Additionally, fines for waste offenses are set to rise significantly from £300 to £5,000, and the use of drones will be expanded to monitor illegal sites.

The initiative follows previous clean-up efforts and identifies three specific locations for immediate clearance: Power Station Road in Kent, Aymer Close in Surrey, and Midland Road in West Yorkshire. These sites collectively contain approximately 22,000 tonnes of illegally dumped waste.
