UK government to decide on North Sea Jackdaw gas field soon

UK Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh has announced that a decision regarding the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea is “imminent.” The government has reviewed all available information on the project, which is located east of Aberdeen.

A decision on the Rosebank oil field, situated off the Shetland Islands, is expected to take longer. Both projects were previously approved by the former Conservative administration but faced legal challenges after the Court of Session in Edinburgh ruled that the full environmental impacts of the extracted fossil fuels had not been sufficiently considered.

The Labour government is navigating a tension between its manifesto promise to ban new North Sea drilling and a stated “pragmatic” approach to energy security and economic growth. While industry proponents argue these fields are necessary to boost security, environmental campaigners warn they will undermine climate goals. This decision comes as UK household energy bills are forecast to rise significantly in the coming months.
