UK government to deploy specialist sexual offence investigators by 2027

The UK government has announced an accelerated rollout of specialist rape and sexual offence investigators across all police forces in England and Wales. Originally scheduled for completion by summer 2029, the deployment is being moved forward by 18 months and is now expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

This initiative aims to combat violence against women and girls (VAWG) by ensuring more consistent investigative quality across different regions. To support these efforts, a £13.3 million fund will be distributed among up to ten police forces to enhance the management of protection orders. These measures include electronic monitoring and the enforcement of exclusion zones for offenders.

While the charity Refuge welcomed the announcement, officials noted that the measures represent only a portion of the support required for survivors. The government stated the plan is designed to relentlessly pursue perpetrators and break the cycle of abuse through intensive offender management.
