UK Government to grant councils more power over vape and betting shops

The UK government has announced new plans to grant local councils increased authority to regulate high street businesses, specifically targeting the proliferation of vape shops, betting shops, and adult gaming centres.

Key measures include scrapping the ‘Aim to Permit’ rule, which currently limits the ability of councils to block betting shops and 24-hour slot machine venues. Under the new proposals, vape shops will require planning permission, allowing authorities to prevent them from opening near schools. Additionally, the maximum duration for Closure Orders will double from six to 12 months, providing police and local authorities more time to investigate premises suspected of links to organized crime.

Local officials and MPs have welcomed the moves as a way to revitalize town centres and protect independent businesses. However, industry bodies for vaping and gambling have expressed concerns that legitimate businesses could be unfairly targeted alongside rogue traders.
