UK Government to respond to petition to cut State Pension age to 65
The UK Government is required to respond to a petition calling for the State Pension age to be lowered to 65 for all citizens. The petition, created by Michelle Gill, surpassed the 10,000-signature threshold necessary to trigger an official government response.
Proponents of the change argue that a lower pension age would allow older workers to retire with greater dignity, particularly for those facing health issues or caring responsibilities. The petition also suggests that reducing the age could facilitate job opportunities for younger people entering the labor market.
Under current legislation, the State Pension age is already scheduled to rise from 66 to 67 in stages between April 2026 and April 2028. While the government is mandated to respond to the petition, an official response does not signify an agreement to implement the requested changes.
