UK government to review airport drop-off charges
The UK government has announced a review of airport drop-off charges following significant price increases across the country. The Department for Transport intends to examine how these fees affect passenger affordability and pricing transparency, as well as the potential for providing free drop-off areas.
Research from the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) indicates that 16 of the UK’s 20 busiest airports have raised fees within the last year, with total annual income from these charges estimated at £300 million. Major airports such as London Gatwick and London Stansted have seen rates rise to £10, while London City Airport was identified as the most expensive on a per-minute basis at £1.60.
The review follows an amendment to the Civil Aviation Bill. While the government has called for restraint in fee increases—particularly in areas with limited public transport—the upcoming review does not grant the power to fix prices directly. Instead, it aims to establish a foundation for future policy, such as fare caps or exemptions for electric vehicles.
