UK Governments Commit £26 million to Home Energy Upgrades in Wales and England

The Welsh Government has earmarked £17 million for home‑energy upgrades across Wales. Funding will be split among three programmes: the Optimised Retrofit Programme (£8 million) for social‑housing retrofits, the Nest scheme (£5 million) to help private‑sector households, and £4 million for area‑based pilots targeting rural and off‑grid homes that rely on heating oil or LPG. Installations include solar panels, battery storage, insulation and modern electric heating, with early results showing household energy costs halved in pilot sites.

In England, the government has increased its Heat Pump Upgrade scheme, offering up to £9,000 to rural families currently using heating oil to switch to electric heat‑pump systems—up from the previous £7,500. The scheme aims to make low‑carbon heating more affordable for thousands of homes.

Welsh Cabinet Minister Siân Gwenllian highlighted that the investment “helps real families spend less on energy and live more comfortably,” while resident Jennifer Devereaux noted the retrofit left her “in credit with the energy supplier” and provided a warmer, healthier home.
