UK Government's New Technical Education Pathways for 14‑Year‑Olds Backed by Logistics and Surveying Bodies

The UK government announced that from 2028 pupils aged 14 will be able to combine core academic subjects with early work experience, practical skills training, improved careers advice and stronger employer engagement. The initiative aims to align education with regional skills needs, address the growing number of young people not in education, employment or training, and create clearer pathways into high‑quality technical careers.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT(UK)) welcomed the announcement, urging that logistics be placed at the heart of the new growth strategy. CILT highlighted its Generation Logistics campaign, which has increased awareness of logistics careers and called for a national coordination body to help learners and employers navigate local opportunities.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) also supported the plan, noting that earlier exposure to surveying and related technical learning could widen access to the profession and help mitigate persistent skills shortages. RICS cited youth unemployment at 16.4%, the highest in 11 years, and emphasized the need for national standards to ensure qualifications remain portable across regions.
