UK graduate job vacancies plunge to record low

Graduate job vacancies in the United Kingdom have fallen by approximately 45 percent over the past year, reaching 8,383 listings in July. This represents the lowest level of entry-level roles recorded since data collection began in 2016. The decline is a significant drop from the 2017 peak, when over 55,000 vacancies were listed.

Several factors are driving this hiring drought. Employers cite rising costs associated with increased National Insurance contributions and minimum wage hikes as barriers to hiring inexperienced staff. Additionally, the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence is allowing major firms, particularly in the accounting and legal sectors, to automate administrative tasks traditionally performed by junior employees.

The contraction comes as a record 262,820 eighteen-year-olds prepare to enter university, raising concerns about a widening gap between degree attainment and professional opportunities. Current data shows youth unemployment for those aged 16 to 24 stands at 16.2 percent, with over one million young people classified as not in education, employment, or training (Neet).
