UK grain harvest 2026 earliest in 20 years as cereal yields fall up to 30%
The Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB) reports that the 2026 harvest in England and Wales was the earliest in at least two decades, with combines entering fields a month ahead of the usual schedule. Farmers across the south and east worked through the night to avoid extreme daytime temperatures, completing harvest two to three weeks earlier than the long‑term average.
Cereal yields are reported to be down by as much as 30% compared with normal expectations, while oilseed rape yields have shown some improvement. AHDB officials attribute the lower cereal output to prolonged dry conditions on lighter soils, variations in rainfall, and soil‑moisture retention. The early harvest and reduced yields are adding financial pressure to growers already facing challenging weather and rising costs.
AHDB director of cereals and oilseeds Anthony Hopkins and senior analyst Anthony Speight note significant farm‑by‑farm variation in yields and stress that a clearer picture will emerge as the harvest season concludes.
