UK group Which? warns of low EPA/DHA in high‑strength omega‑3 supplements
Consumer watchdog Which? examined 24 omega‑3 products sold in the United Kingdom, using the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition’s recommendation of 450 mg of EPA and DHA per day and a 1,000 mg benchmark for “high‑strength” claims. The test found several supplements marketed as high‑strength – including Superdrug, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s 1,000 mg fish‑oil capsules and Holland & Barrett’s 1,500 mg product – contained only 250‑375 mg of EPA/DHA, well below the advised dose, while costing up to twice as much as comparable non‑high‑strength alternatives.
Which? noted that cheaper brands such as Nutravita, Weightworld and Zipvit provided at least 1,000 mg of EPA/DHA per dose for less than 20 p, and urged shoppers to look beyond total fish‑oil claims on front‑of‑pack labels, as the amount of active omega‑3 fatty acids is often disclosed only in smaller print on the back.
