UK health officials issue guidance amid rise in XFG Covid cases

Health officials in the United Kingdom are issuing guidance following a significant rise in COVID-19 infections. Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) indicates that positive test rates reached approximately 7% in September, with recorded cases increasing from 1,374 in August to 4,589 in September. Hospital admissions also saw a substantial climb, rising from 950 to 4,939 during the same period.

The surge is linked to the XFG variant, also nicknamed ‘Stratus’ or ‘American Covid’, which is a combination of the LF.7 and LP.8.1.2 strains. While the UKHSA has stated there is no evidence that this variant causes more severe illness than previous strains, officials have advised the public on managing symptoms.

Guidance for those experiencing respiratory symptoms includes staying home when unwell, avoiding contact with vulnerable individuals, and wearing well-fitting face masks in public to minimize transmission. Other recommendations include practicing frequent hand hygiene and avoiding crowded indoor spaces. Officials suggest the increase in circulation may be partly due to more people staying indoors as weather conditions become colder and wetter.
