UK health officials urge flu and Covid-19 vaccinations

Health officials in the United Kingdom are urging eligible residents to receive flu and Covid-19 vaccinations ahead of the winter season. The NHS autumn and winter vaccination programme, which launched on 1 October, aims to protect high-risk groups from serious illness.

Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) indicates that nearly 4,000 deaths in England were linked to flu last winter. Despite a drop in vaccine efficacy among adults to between 21% and 34%, the rollout prevented an estimated 104,000 hospital admissions and 7,100 deaths. Additionally, the RSV vaccine showed approximately 82% effectiveness in preventing hospitalisations for adults aged 75 to 79.

Eligible groups for flu vaccinations include adults aged 65 and over, pregnant women, frontline health and social care workers, and individuals with certain long-term health conditions. For Covid-19, eligibility includes adults aged 75 and over and those aged six months to 74 years with weakened immune systems. Age UK has advised older citizens not to become complacent, noting that seasonal viruses can lead to severe illness and significant pressure on NHS services.
