UK health officials urge students to receive Meningitis B vaccine

Health authorities in Wales and Scotland are urging students to receive the Meningitis B vaccine ahead of the new academic year. The immunisation programmes target young people entering university or residential further education for the first time, as they are considered at higher risk due to close social contact and shared living facilities.

In Wales, over 17,000 young people have already received vaccinations during the initial rollout. Officials emphasize that the vaccine requires two doses, administered one month apart, to ensure full protection. The offer is available to those born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, as well as students under 25 entering higher education.

In Scotland, the campaign follows recent outbreaks in the UK, including a fatal incident in England earlier this year. Health workers note that the bacteria can spread through close contact, such as sharing drinks, vapes, or kissing. Clinics have been established at locations like Glasgow University to facilitate access for students.
