UK health officials warn GLP‑1 medication users to stay hydrated amid heatwave
More than 1.5 million people in the United Kingdom are estimated to be using GLP‑1 weight‑loss drugs such as Mounjaro and Wegovy through private providers. With temperatures reaching around 40 °C in parts of the country, clinicians are urging these patients to pay extra attention to fluid intake.
Clinical Nutrition Lead Laura Perez explained that reduced appetite from GLP‑1 therapy can lead to unintentionally low drinking volumes, increasing the risk of dehydration. She listed five symptoms to watch for: dizziness or light‑headedness, persistent headaches, fatigue and low energy, constipation, and dark urine. Perez stressed that “thirst is often a sign that you’re already mildly dehydrated,” and recommended drinking regularly rather than waiting until thirsty.
To stay hydrated, Perez advises keeping a water bottle, setting drinking reminders, and incorporating water‑rich foods such as watermelon, cucumber, strawberries and yoghurt. She also notes that milk, plant‑based milks, sugar‑free squash, sparkling water and herbal teas can help meet fluid needs during a heatwave.
