UK Health Security Agency reports measles deaths amid rising outbreak

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued its first Health Security Risk Assessment, outlining the nation’s most serious health threats over the next five years. Scenarios cover a novel coronavirus pandemic, an influenza strain infecting half the population, the spread of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes leading to dengue cases, and other hazards across seven themes such as respiratory and vector‑borne diseases.

In a separate update, UKHSA confirmed that measles continues to circulate widely, with 736 laboratory‑confirmed cases recorded between 1 January and 8 June 2026. Outbreaks are concentrated in London, the East of England and the West Midlands. Two children have died from measles, prompting statements from consultant epidemiologist Dr Vanessa Saliba and Health Secretary James Murray urging parents to ensure vaccination with MMR/MMRV. The agency emphasizes that vaccination protects both individuals and vulnerable community members.

The risk assessment and the measles data highlight the agency’s focus on preparedness, urging enhanced vaccination coverage and broader public‑health measures to mitigate future health emergencies.
