GTEC urges heating engineers to pursue heat pump training

GTEC has called on heating engineers to utilize government-funded training to address a shortage in the heat pump workforce. This comes as MCS figures indicate that certified heat pump installations in the first half of 2026 were 17% lower than the same period in 2025, despite record numbers for overall certified renewable installations.

To meet the UK's Warm Homes Plan target of 450,000 annual heat pump installations by 2030, industry experts emphasize the need for qualified installers. Current support includes the Heat Training Grant, which offers eligible engineers in England up to £500 for approved training, and the extension of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme through 2030.

Industry professionals, such as Steve Clark of Mitsubishi Electric, highlight the transition from traditional gas heating to low-carbon technology as a vital career pivot. Training allows engineers to move from reactive maintenance to proactive system design, helping to meet the growing demand for sustainable home heating solutions.
