UK heatwave and royal methane summit underscore urgent climate action

London is enduring an intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching 34 °C on Monday and an amber health warning in force for parts of the UK. The heat has raised concerns over vulnerable populations, prompted travel disruptions on rail services and sparked speculation about a possible hosepipe ban, following temporary bans already imposed in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Kent.

On 24 June, His Majesty King Charles attended a UK government‑led reception at St James’s Palace that gathered senior figures from government, science, philanthropy and industry to accelerate action on methane, a potent short‑lived greenhouse gas responsible for about a third of current warming. Demonstrations of methane leaks highlighted the scale of waste—roughly 200 billion m³ of gas annually—and the need for stricter standards. The EU Methane Regulation, which requires measurement, reporting and reduction of emissions, could cut global oil‑and‑gas methane releases by up to 30 %. The UK’s Fossil Fuel Regulatory Programme, backed by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, announced new participants Egypt, Brazil and Bosnia‑Herzegovina, aiming to help up to 20 developing nations implement effective methane controls.
